Our Approach

Our vision is to live colorfully. We live by the following tenants:

  • Provide the highest quality products
  • Deliver superior customer service

We are motivated by the constant drive to serve our customers.

Our Story

Spectra Colorants was founded in 1993 to serve a product-market need for globally registered colorants. Our liquid colorants are easy to measure, manage, and incorporate than their dry powder format. With liquid, you can better control your color resulting in cost reduction, color accuracy, and manufacturing efficiencies. Spectra serves customized solutions for our customers that range from local customers to international customers.

What are Pigment Dispersions?

Pigment dispersions are aqueous pigment concentrates made from pigments combined with a resin/surfactant package. We make dispersions in large batches using bead mills to achieve a better grind than ball mills. Using bead mills ensures a finer grind resulting in cleaner and richer colors. We are able to mill products down to nm in particle size depending on your application needs.

How do I store pigment dispersions?

  • Seal the product when not in use to reduce air exposure.
  • Store it in a moderate temperature-controlled facility (50-80°F or 10-27°C). These products are unstable at extreme temperatures (T<40°F or T>110°F), so do not freeze or expose to heat. Ideally store in a climate where you can wear long-sleeves comfortably.
  • Reduce exposure to sunlight as extensive exposure to UV rays are harmful to dispersions (and to your skin).
  • Mix before using.
  • Consuming dispersions “first in, first out.”

Do your products contain VOC?

We have products that are VOC-free and a handful that contain <0.10% VOC.

How do I ship dispersions?

Pigment dispersions are shipped under freight class 55. If shipping internationally, the HTS code is 3204.17 Pigments And Preparations Based Thereon.
